Sinus Precautions
PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW THESE ADDITIONAL SINUS PRECAUTION INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. Certain oral surgery procedures are performed near your sinuses and require additional post-operative care. For example, sometimes the roots of your upper teeth lie very close to your sinuses. Because the bone between your sinuses and your upper teeth roots may be very thin (like paper), occasionally when upper teeth are removed, this thin bone may tear. Drainage from your sinuses may then drip down into your mouth through the teeth sockets. Additionally, fluids that you drink may leak up into your sinuses or nose. If this drainage or leakage occurs repeatedly during the first several days after your teeth are removed, then your healing may be impaired requiring additional surgery. Therefore, it is important that you follow these additional restrictions for at least the next 2 weeks.
ADDITIONAL RESTRICTIONS FOR 2 WEEKS
- No nose blowing
- No bending over at the waist (keep head above waist)
- Sneeze with your mouth open (not through your nose)
Please note that slight bleeding from your nose is common on the night of the procedure. However, persistent or heavy bleeding from your nose is not normal, and if you experience this then you should notify Dr. Abel immediately, as well as call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.
If you become aware of hearing a whistling sound from your surgical sites, then please take extra care to follow these sinus precaution instructions more carefully. If you are experiencing nasal congestion and desire to blow your nose during the 2 weeks that you are following these additional restrictions, instead gently wipe your nose clean with a facial tissue, and, if prescribed, use the nasal sprays or decongestant recommended by Dr. Abel.
Your sinus drainage will usually resolve on its own as your surgical sites heal, if you follow these sinus precaution instructions. Failure to follow these additional restrictions will increase the likelihood that your mouth-to-sinus communication will persist requiring additional surgery to repair.
